This blog has been a long time coming.
Like most speech-language pathologists, I was initially drawn to this field because I wanted to help people. Not by merely checking a box with a disorder label and then using formulaic methods to “fix” it, but really help individuals with their unique needs and circumstances. A person’s overall quality of life is far more important than what might happen in an isolated 30 or 60 minute therapy session.
Things like speech, language, or executive functions permeate everything we do as families and individuals. They affect our social interactions and sense of connection, having peace at home, and our ability to realize our full potential despite challenges. The stressors and breakdowns at home, the challenges at school, the actual pain points in a person’s life, those are the things I want us to tackle when a person seeks out help from Sawyer Speech and Language Therapy.
I’m grateful for the ways my education and many years of both professional and personal experience as a mother of children with special needs have allowed me to come to the place where I am now. I am passionate in my mission to help families bring calm to the chaos, find hope where there has been frustration and dead ends, and figuring out actionable next steps. I teach it, but I have also lived it.
As a private practice owner, one of the biggest challenges has always been that there is only one of me. Even as I hire additional clinicians, we are still limited by the number of available therapy slots, and the business model of helping clients one at time.
I want to do more.
So thank you for starting this journey with me. I look forward to using this blog outlet as a way to reach and help more people, along with other plans for creating more online content, holding workshops and seminars, public speaking engagements, and more. I’m excited to get sharing!
